Documented audit

The catalog and search work as you'd expect from an online department store, but its Trustpilot reputation is among the lowest of all the stores audited in this series, with complaints heavily concentrated around delivery and customer service.

El Corte Inglés is, alongside AliExpress and eDreams, one of the cases in this audit series where brand size and recognition don’t match the verifiable digital reputation. We approach it with the same honesty as the rest: being Spain’s largest retail group doesn’t exempt it from showing real figures when they’re unfavorable.

Catalog and navigation: correct for the volume they handle

The online store organizes a huge catalog — fashion, home, electronics, food, leisure — into navigable categories with filters by price, brand and rating. The search engine does its job reasonably well given the size of the catalog, which combines the group’s direct sales with products from external sellers within its marketplace.

Checkout and availability: the first friction point

The problem starts to show at the moment of purchase: several reviews describe products marked as available at checkout that, some time later, turn out not to actually be in stock, with the payment held while the situation is resolved. This complaint pattern appears often enough that it shouldn’t be treated as an isolated anecdote.

Real reputation: the lowest in this audit series

El Corte Inglés has a TrustScore of 1.2 out of 5 on Trustpilot, across more than 11,000 reviews, with 91% of recent ratings at one star. It’s by far the lowest figure of any store audited so far by Product Auditors. Complaints concentrate on three points: real product availability at the time of purchase, prolonged delivery delays (sometimes ending in order cancellation), and customer service users repeatedly describe as unresponsive, with refunds that can take weeks to complete.

A necessary caveat: online isn’t the same as a physical store

It’s worth clarifying that Trustpilot mainly captures online purchase experiences with an issue; it doesn’t directly measure the in-store experience, which is where the group has its historical roots and likely maintains a different reputation. This audit focuses explicitly on the digital channel (web and app), not on the physical department-store experience.

Mobile app and loyalty program

The iOS and Android app provides access to the catalog, the loyalty card and order management, with correct but unremarkable functionality. The El Corte Inglés card program, with its points and financing system, remains one of the most recognized in Spain, though its value depends on each user’s purchase frequency. The app has added features connecting the digital channel with the in-store experience, such as appointment booking and table or order management at the group’s cafés, an interesting product move in the right direction, even if it doesn’t by itself resolve the underlying problems detected in the online sales channel.

Reputation in 2026: the same pattern, with even more volume

Reviewing the Trustpilot profile again in September 2026, review volume has kept growing to surpass 11,300, and the complaint pattern is practically identical to what was already described: orders canceled weeks after purchase due to lack of real stock and without clear compensation (one recently documented case involves a mid-range bicycle paid for in March 2026 and canceled 40 days later), appliances arriving late and already defective with the seller not following up after the issue is reported, and returns several users describe as a process requiring “countless calls and emails” before being resolved. There are also occasional satisfactory reviews with issue-free orders, confirming the problem isn’t systematic across every order, but it is frequent and sustained enough over time (not a single month’s spike) to keep this audit’s reputation score low.

Methodology for this audit

This analysis is based on El Corte Inglés’s official website’s public documentation and on verified reviews published on Trustpilot, checked in September 2026. It does not replace a first-hand purchase and focuses specifically on the digital channel, not the in-store experience. You can read more in our editorial methodology.
